Half of Perus 27 million inhabitants live in the narrow coasline, mainly in the big cities. Lima is the biggest city with its 8 million inhabitants, and is the 5th biggest in Latinamerica. The second biggest city is Arequipa and third is Trujillo, both has more than one million each. Allmost half the population live in the Andes, and many of them are farmers. There are some bigger cities, but most live in villages. Many families live in poverty, and many come to the bigger cities to get a better life, but often they end up in shantytowns with health-problems. In the amazone-basin which is the biggest geographical region, live only 5 % of the population.
About 45 % of the peruvians are of indigenous origin, 37 % are meztizos, 15 % white and 3 % black or asian.
Spanish is the first languange. In big parts of the Andes they speak their local language, Aymara or Quechua, and spanish where spanish is their second language. Very few speak english, but it is getting more and more common, specially in touristic areas, and among people with higher education.
