Politics

Peru is a constitutional democratic republic. The president is the head of state, as well as the leader of the parliament. There are two vise-presidents, and 12 cabinet-members. The congress consists of 120 members. Voting is mandatory for all citizens between 18 and 70 years old. The politics in Peru has been turbulent with many corruption-scandals, for example the mentioned Fujimori-Montesinosscandal. The president has a strong power in Peru, and the election of the president is very important for the stability of the country. The peruvians have experienced that even a corrupt semi-dictatorship can do more for the country than presidents that do not have the competence of leadership. It is said that politics is never boring in Peru. The most important political parties with their most important figures in parenthesis in the last few decades are: APRA(Alan Garcia), Peru Posible(Alejandro Toledo), Somos Peru(Lourdes Flores), Accion Popular(Fernando Belaunde), Peru 2000(Alberto Fujimori). Most of the parties are on the right wing, like in most part of latinamerica.
